Rivian plans to add coffee ordering and service booking to its assistant in 2027
Rivian plans to expand Rivian Assistant’s capabilities in 2027 to help drivers order coffee along their route and arrange vehicle servicing, according to InsideEVs. Wassym Bensaid, the company’s head of software, discussed the plans in an interview with the Plugged-In Podcast.
When ordering coffee, the assistant would choose a coffee shop and time the order based on when the driver will arrive. Rivian’s aim is for the drink to be at the right temperature when the driver stops to pick it up.
Servicing would start with diagnostics: Rivian wants the system to detect faults in advance and book a service appointment for the owner. The service center would have the parts needed for the work ready by the time the owner arrives. Bensaid expects this approach to make servicing easier for owners and help service centers operate more efficiently.
Rivian launched its own assistant in May. From the outset, it worked with Google Calendar and allowed drivers to reschedule appointments. Gmail support was added in October. Rivian Assistant also currently answers general questions, sends messages and controls certain vehicle functions, including the air conditioning.
Work on the new capabilities is already underway, but Rivian wants to make them more reliable before a broad rollout, Bensaid explained. Owners have also complained about shortcomings in the assistant’s existing features. The company continues to refine them both on its own and with partners.
Further down the road, Rivian wants to integrate the assistant more closely with the vehicle’s operating system. The company wants drivers to be able to use voice commands for actions that currently require the touchscreen.
