Roadster Atlas Lets You Take a Miata NB Apart Down to the Bolts
Ryan Montgomery has created an interactive 3D model of the NB-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, The Drive reports. Roadster Atlas is free to use in a browser, requires no registration or download, and lets users explore the car’s interior.
Montgomery, creator of the Roadster Republic brand, spent several months on the project. He based the model on his own 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata but wanted it to represent the entire NB generation, which spans the 1999–2005 model years.
The model contains 699 individual parts, from body panels to bolts. The engine can also be taken apart into its components. To examine the car’s inner workings, users can hide the body or switch to an exploded view that shows the parts separated from one another.
Users can drag to change the viewing angle and inspect the car from different sides. The model also works in mobile browsers, although Montgomery recommends using a computer.
The project shows how the car’s mechanisms work. Users can watch an animation of the engine running and see how different suspension settings change its geometry.
Montgomery drew measurements from published Mazda specifications, media reports and information from the community. That included information from owners whose cars had been taken apart. He plans to create models of other Miata generations.
Roadster Atlas helps users understand how the parts fit together and may be useful to owners planning aftermarket modifications. It is not a substitute for a repair manual.
